The climax to a devastating and very dark season of the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon season 3 now moves into the final act of The Dance of the Dragons with its fourth and final season.

House of the Dragon season 3 reviews
House of the Dragon season 3 is the highest-rated season of the show so far, at least according to Rotten Tomatoes, where season 3 is 92%-rated (compared to season 1's 90% and season 2's 84%). Our own House of the Dragon season 3 review (which covers the first four episodes, all that was made available to press at the time) says it's "as good as a Westeros-set show has been since before Game of Thrones' late-run downswing."
Our House of the Dragon season 3 episode 8 review is similarly glowing, calling the epsiode "a drastic improvement over season 2's abrupt cliffhanger conclusion" and "a Game of Thrones-worthy season finale.... House of the Dragon is heading into its fourth and final season from a position of strength."
House of the Dragon season 3 release date
House of the Dragon season 3 episode 1 released on June 20, 2026. The season 3 finale dropped on August 9, 2026. The release date was confirmed with the second trailer for season 3. Season 3, much like season 2, is eight episodes long.
Season 4, meanwhile, is marked for 2028. "We're actually starting to show HBO," Ryan Condal said about season 4's scripts at a recent press conference attended by GamesRadar+. "This is our early iteration. I don't put the script down and take it away from me in production, and we have many months ahead of that. But we're as far ahead at this point in crafting a new season while we're still posting the old one."
Is House of the Dragon season 3 the final season?
No, House of the Dragon season 3 won't be the final season – but season 4 will be. Showrunner Ryan Condal confirmed that things will wrap up after four seasons in a press conference after the season 2 finale and HBO boss Casey Bloys confirmed the news in February 2026.
"The idea has always been to follow the history of the Targaryens. If you know the books, you know how the Targaryens end up. So there is a natural end to this particular history of that House of the Targaryens," he said.
House of the Dragon season 3 cast
There were some big casualties in the second season – including Eve Best's Rhaenys and some of the younger Targaryens (thanks to Blood and Cheese, need we say more?), which led to some changes to the House of the Dragon season 3 cast.
There were some new arrivals in the third outing as well, including James Norton's Ormund Hightower, after he was name-dropped at the end of season 2.

House of the Dragon season 3 plot
House of the Dragon season 3 is bookended by huge battles, starting with the infamous Battle of the Gullet. During the epic skirmish at sea, Jacaerys Velaryon and his dragon Vermax perish. Rhaenyra is grief-stricken to have lost her eldest son, but the opportunity to conquer King's Landing, almost unopposed, shortly after would seem to make all her struggles and sacrifices worthwhile... right?
Er, wrong. Rhaenyra finds that sitting on the Iron Throne isn't necessarily all it's cracked up to be. Before they fled, the Hightowers raided the Red Keep's coffers, leaving the crown destitute. This makes ruling a very hungry population while fighting a war with the remnants of Team Green, a major thorn in Rhaenyra's side.
To make matters worse, after supposedly surrendering, Lord Ormund Hightower occupies Tumbleton in the name of Alicent's son Daeron Targaryen. Ormund is pushing his ward Daeron as the rightful king following the 'death' of King Aegon, and snakes his way into Tumbleton to stop Rhaenyra and Daemon simply incinerating his forces.
Despite promises that they would be freed, Rhaenyra keeps Alicent and Helaena as prisoners in the Red Keep. Alicent convinces Rhaenyra to declare Aegon dead, but this comes back to bite Rhaenyra when the Seven Kingdoms learn that Aegon is alive following Sunfyre's miraculous resurrection. Helaena, we learn, is pregnant with Aegon's heir. Helaena, realizing she may never be free, takes her own life in the season finale rather than live as a prisoner.
Much like Daemon in season 2, Aemond spends almost the entirety of season 3 in Harrenhal, under the care of Alys Rivers after he is stabbed and nearly killed. Alys eventually seduces Aemond, with the goal of having children and raising their own flight of dragons. Alicent even shows up and tries to poison her own son, at Rhaenyra's behest, but Aemond survives. In the season finale, Alys reveals she is the immortal wife of Harren the Black, and has been cursed to walk around Harrenhal for over a century. Aegon also confronts Aemond in Harrenhal, but chooses to team up with his kinslayer brother in order to reclaim his throne.
Season 3 ends with the devastating Battle of Tumbleton. Ormund, Roddy the Ruin and countless soldiers and civilians are killed when Ulf not only turns on Team Black, but also starts raining dragonfire down on the town indiscriminately. Daemon is almost killed by Bold Jon Roxton, but survives when their fight is broken up by falling debris. Daeron seemingly survives, but his whereabouts and that of his dragon Tessarion, is unknown. Hugh's wife Kat dies off-screen in the battle. After the battle, Caraxes and Vermithor are seen pursuing Ulf on Silverwing.
Meanwhile, in King's Landing, Rhaenyra exiles Mysaria, dismisses the concerns that Baela voices, and has the High Septon killed after he refuses to annoint her following the news of Aegon's resurrection. In a speech to the Smallfolk, she reveals the truth about the prophecy and claims that she is the Prince That Was Promised – the only one who can protect the realm from the looming threat North of the Wall. The season ends with Rhaenyra looking upon Helaena's prophetic tapestry, which spells doom for her and the dragons.
