House of the Dragon, for all its high-flying beasts, hasn't exactly soared when it comes to season finales. Season 2 was cut short by the 2023 Writers' strike, with the opening chapters of season 3 – climaxing in Rhaenyra's ascent to the Iron Throne – plainly the once-planned conclusion of season 2. One of the best things you can say about the House of the Dragon season 3 episode 8 is that it feels like a season finale, and a Game of Thrones-worthy season finale at that.
The centerpiece here is the Battle of Tumbleton, making this a season bookended by war on land and sea. Showrunner Ryan Condal compared the season's opening skirmish at the Gullet to Lord of the Rings' Helm's Deep, but the comparison is more appropriate here, not least because much of the battle involves the Winter Wolves scaling the walls of Tumbleton, but with far greater success than the Uruk-hai. Roddy the Ruin gets his glorious death, dying for his Queen in a blaze of dragonfire, but not before landing a cathartic fatal blow on season 3 rotter Ormund Hightower.
