House of the Dragon season 3, episode 1's blue dragon explained: how it links to a missing Targaryen

Caraxes in House of the Dragon season 3.

In House of the Dragon season 3, episode 1, we see a mysterious blue dragon in a brief shot midway through the episode.

But who is this dragon, and what is its connection to a missing Targaryen prince? Below, we explain all, including this dragon's identity and its rider. Now, a warning that the following contains light spoilers for George R.R. Martin's Fire and Blood, so turn back now if you don't want to know what might be coming up in the HBO adaptation.

So, for all you need to know about the blue dragon and its rider in House of the Dragon season 3, head to the below. For more, check out our guide to all the House of the Dragon dragons listed and explained.

Who is the blue dragon in House of the Dragon season 3, episode 1? Tessarion and Daeron Targaryen explained

In the first episode of the new season, we briefly glimpse a majestic – if a tad small – blue dragon hanging out in the green camp, which is led by James Norton's Ormund Hightower. We saw this same dragon quickly at the end of House of the Dragon season 2, but it wasn't identified then, either.

Thankfully, we have George R.R. Martin's Fire and Blood to tell us exactly who this blue dragon is, as well as the identity of her rider. The dragon is none other than Tessarion, who is bonded with young prince Daeron Targaryen (not to be confused with the drunken dreamer Daeron introduced in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms).

Daeron is the son of Alicent Hightower and Viserys Targaryen, and he has been entirely absent from the show so far, even though all of Alicent's other children play major roles in the Dance of the Dragons.

Judging by Tessarion's appearance, though, we can assume that Daeron might be making an appearance soon. Just when this missing Targaryen prince might arrive – and what impact he might have on the ongoing war between Team Black vs. Team Green – remains to be seen.

House of the Dragon continues weekly on HBO in the US and HBO Max, NOW, and Sky in the UK. You can keep up to date with our House of the Dragon release schedule.
