During a recent hearing, House Intelligence Chair Mike Turner raised concerns about the security provided for former President Donald Trump in light of an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate him. Turner questioned US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle on whether the security measures in place were adequate to address the threat.
Turner pressed Cheatle on whether the threat assessment had taken into account the intelligence regarding the Iranian plot. Cheatle stated that the information available at the time was sufficient to protect Trump from the perceived threat.
Turner also mentioned a conversation with FBI Director Chris Wray, who expressed shock and concern that the Iranian threat had not been fully integrated into the security protocols. Wray emphasized the heightened terrorist threat level facing the country, comparing it to the period following 9/11.
Recent reports indicated that US authorities had received intelligence on a potential plot by Iran to assassinate Trump, prompting an increase in security measures around the former president. However, there was no evidence linking Thomas Matthew Crooks, the individual who attempted to harm Trump, to the alleged Iranian plot.
