House 'fire-bombed' at 2am as families sleep next door

A house close to a school and a charity for young adults with learning difficulties was "fire-bombed" in the early hours of Sunday.

Merseyside Police today confirmed a joint investigation between the force and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) is underway following the incident on Bracknell Avenue, Kirkby. Police received reports of a fire at the terraced house at around 2am on Sunday, April 16.

MFRS had already been called to the property and arrived on the street at 1.59am. Fire crews from three engines used a hose reel jet to extinguish a fire at the front door of the property before handing over the scene to the police shortly after 3am.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "No one was injured but further reports and examinations have established that the fire may have been caused deliberately."

A local source told the ECHO families with children live either side of the property. They added: "Reporting this is a matter of urgency so people in the area are aware and remain safe and can make an informed decision as to whether to let their kids walk past. We want to make the community aware."

Images taken by the ECHO on Bracknell Avenue this afternoon showed a wooden board covering the front door of the house. The house is on the same road as Activate, a charity that provides programmes for young adults with learning difficulties, and Kirkby High School.

Merseyside Police is appealing for information regarding the incident and have urged anyone who witnessed it to contact them.
