The House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman, Mark Green, is set to visit the site of the Trump rally shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Monday. The committee is conducting an investigation into how security was handled at the campaign event.
Chairman Green expressed the committee's commitment to seeking answers from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Secret Service regarding the security lapses that led to the near-assassination of former President Trump and the tragic murder of Corey Comperatore, a rally attendee who lost his life in the attack.
In response to the incident, the committee has subpoenaed Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for documents and information related to the failed security efforts surrounding the attempted assassination of Trump. The agency missed the deadline to produce the requested documents by Friday.
Additionally, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, who has faced criticism from some Republican lawmakers following the shooting, is scheduled to testify before the House Committee on Oversight on Monday.
The visit to the shooting site aims to provide the committee with a better understanding of the circumstances that led to the near-assassination. The committee's efforts underscore the importance of ensuring robust security measures at public events to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
