Hotel guest 'barricades self in room and sets fire to bed'

A suspect remains in custody after allegedly barricading himself in a hotel room and setting fire to his bed.

Cheshire Police offices descended on the Holiday Inn on Wood Lane in Runcorn at 11pm on Saturday following reports of an incident.

A force spokesman said they found a man had “barricaded himself inside a room and set fire to his bedding”.

He was arrested on suspicion of offences including arson with intent.

The suspect remained in custody on Monday.

Residents told the ECHO a massive police presence had been seen responding to the incident.

The force spokesman said: “The man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of affray, arson with intent to endanger life and assaulting an emergency services worker.

“He remains in police custody at the current time.”
