Hospitality restrictions across West Dunbartonshire to be lifted next week

All hospitality restrictions implemented over the festive period in West Dunbartonshire will be lifted next week.

Nicola Sturgeon announced this afternoon that rules introduced in a bid to reduce the spread of omicron, including table service only for venues selling alcohol and mandated social distancing between groups will be lifted from next Monday, January 24.

Nightclubs, which have been closed for a number of weeks, can also reopen as usual from Monday.

The Scottish Government will also be ending the guidance limiting indoor gatherings to three households.

However people are still being asked to work from home and to take lateral flow tests before meeting with others.

She said: "The remaining statutory measures introduced in response to omicron are as follows; limits on attendance at indoor public events; the requirement for 1 metre physical distancing between different groups in indoor public places; the requirement for table service in hospitality premises serving alcohol on the premises; and the closure of nightclubs.

"Given the improving situation - and as I said last week we hoped to be able to do - I can confirm today that all of these measures will be lifted from next Monday, 24 January."

During her statement Sturgeon also announce a small change to the covid passport scheme in nightclubs.

She said: "At the moment, nightclubs and other late night venues must apply the covid certification scheme if they have, in use, a designated area for dancing.

“We intend to amend the definition here to provide greater clarity and prevent premises from avoiding certification simply by having tables on a dancefloor - and therefore claiming it is not a dancefloor - but still permitting dancing around the tables.

“This change will take effect from Monday when late night venues are able to reopen.”

The First Minister explained that omicron is still infecting "large numbers of people, but that Scotland is now on the "downward slope" of infections from the coronavirus strain.

Speaking in the Scottish Parliament, Nicola Sturgeon set out statistics showing a "significant fall" in new cases, though the NHS remained under "acute pressure".

She said: "Taking all of this into account, and triangulating the various sources of data, allows us to say with some confidence that the rise in cases driven by Omicron peaked in the first week of January and that we are now on the downward slope of this wave of cases."
