A translation error on a Welsh language sign at a hospital has had people in stitches with the notice sending out a very different message. The sign was spotted by a visitor to Llandudno Hospital earlier this week and the Facebook post received several comments, many of which poked fun at the mistake.
The sign reads (in English): "To raise alarm please ring bell", with the Welsh translation underneath saying: "Codi braw ffoniwch gloch." Unfortunately, the Welsh roughly translates as: "Raise a fright, phone the alarm."
The picture appeared on the Arwyddion Cymraeg Gwael (Poor Welsh signs) Facebook Page and has had a lot of reaction, reports North Wales Live. Gruff a Nia Elis Williams said: "Surely there were Welsh speakers in the hospital who would have pointed out the sign. Tired of laughing at the complacency of managers who allow this."
Amy Smith said: "I nearly woke my baby up laughing at this. Shocking." Margaret Eifiona Hewitt said: "Terrible! We really need clear instructions here, disgraceful." The sign was spotted by eagle-eyed Osian Dafydd, who joked: "I noticed the sign when I was in the lift at Ysbyty Llandudno. I didn't have reception to phone the bell or frighten it either!"
A Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board spokesperson said: "We are aware of the incorrect signage on display at Llandudno Hospital. This is currently in the process of being replaced."
