A horse has been euthanised and a jockey taken to hospital after falling during a race at Moonee Valley racecourse in Melbourne on Saturday.

Jockey Teo Nugent fell from Florescent Star after the mare appeared to clip the heels of another horse and crash into the turf and through the inside barrier.

Nugent was conscious, moving his limbs and talking with medics, according to Racing Victoria, and was being transferred to hospital.

Florescent Star was euthanised on the course due to the injuries sustained during the fall.

Trainers Ash Yargi and Amy Johnston wrote on Twitter: “We are devastated. We love you Flo.”

It is the third fall in three weeks at Melbourne racecourses after jockeys Ethan Brown and Mark Zahra were thrown from their horses in the same fall earlier in March, and Jamie Kah and Craig Williams fell last weekend at Flemington.

Brown suffered abdominal injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment where he underwent multiple surgeries.

Kah was taken to hospital in critical condition with a serious concussion and is now recovering, while Williams broke several bones but has since been discharged.
