Horror on the street where attempted murder investigation launched after man stabbed

Residents on a street where a young man was stabbed in Radcliffe have spoken of their horror at the incident. A man in his 20s was rushed to hospital after being found with stab wounds on Ulundi Street early on Sunday morning (February 5).

Emergency services swarmed the street shortly after 6am, with paramedics and police responding to the incident. A back alley, behind the homes on Ulundi Street, was cordoned off, with forensics also conducting investigations throughout the day.

There was a feeling of unease and concern for those living in the area - particularly for those with families and young children, who told the Manchester Evening News the area is typically 'quiet' with police usually called out for 'petty things'.

One woman, whose Victoria Street home looks out over the back alley, said: "It is really quiet around here. Radcliffe has a bad reputation but I haven't ever had any problems, and our neighbours are lovely.

"I didn't hear anything apart from the sirens. I looked at my phone and it was 6am. The blue lights filled up my whole bedroom, and when I looked out I saw loads of police cars had parked down the back alley, then I heard a lot of shouting in the street but couldn't hear what they were saying.

"I have lived here for 12 years with no trouble, but this does make you worry. I have children living with me so to think this can happen is scary."

Another mum, who has lived on adjoining Abden Street for 13 years, added: "I can't believe this has happened. To be honest, police don't come out much and if they do it is only for petty things, there isn't really ever much trouble.

"I hope he (the victim) is okay. It's just horrible to hear something like that can happen so close to home. I honestly can't believe it. I didn't see or hear anything so this is a massive shock."

However that same sentiment was not shared by one local man, who told the M.E.N he was mugged on Ulundi Street recently and that the sign of police is far from shocking.

"I'm not surprised one bit, there’s always something going on round here," he said. "It’s getting worse - just a few months ago I was mugged along here."

Police and forensics officers remained stationed along the alleyway behind Ulundi Street throughout much of Sunday. Witnesses said they saw crime scene investigators using torches to inspect the backyard of one property. There was also another scene in place in Stoneclough, but police said there was 'no wider disruption' to the surrounding area and that investigations are ongoing.

A man, aged 34, has since been arrested by police on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody for questioning. The victim is said to be in a stable condition in hospital and has not suffered life-threatening injuries.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 6am this morning (Sunday 5 February), police were called to a report of an incident on Ulundi Street in Radcliffe. Emergency services attended and a man in his 20s was taken to hospital with stab wounds. He remains in stable condition with non life-threatening injuries.

"A 34 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and has been taken into custody ahead of being questioned by detectives. There are several scenes in place across Radcliffe and Stoneclough with no wider disruption to the surrounding area. The investigation is on-going and officers are continuing to follow up a number of lines of enquiry."
