Gut-churning footage released by police showed the moment a pair of idiotic moped riders came within a split second of death at a level crossing.
The video showed the two people riding on one motor scooter come within centimetres of a speeding train in what British Transport Police (BTP) called, the “most shocking” incident of its type it had ever seen.
The footage, shot by a security camera, showed the moped driver swerve around a lowered safety barrier and enter the level crossing with his passenger clinging on behind.
The pair then cut across the path of a speeding commuter train, missing obliteration by centimetres, before zooming out of shot.
A 15-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the incident, and has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.
The nail-biting moment was shared by British Transport Police to Twitter.
The BTP called it "some of the most shocking footage we've ever seen at a level crossing in Sussex".
It added: "These riders were split seconds away from a catastrophic collision, which we have no doubt would have had fatal consequences.
“Please don't take stupid risks like this on the railway."
In a later tweet, BTP added: "We’re pleased to update that a 15-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with this incident.
“He’s been released under investigation pending further enquiries."
Twitter users shared their shock at seeing how close the riders were to danger.
One person tweeted: "It’s the train drivers I feel sad for. That must have been horrifying for that driver."
Meanwhile, shocking footage from last year showed two young children dance on railway tracks as a train thunders past at more than 125mph while two adults watch.
The boys were seen playing on a level crossing, pushing and shoving each other as the 10-carriage service approached at high speed.
As it gets nearer, one seemed to seek cover while the other brazenly waved at passengers, seemingly oblivious to the extreme danger he is in.
Moments after the Great Western Railway train has gone two women run onto the tracks after the young boys.
