'Horrendous' roadworks in Mapperley 'drive neighbours crazy' as work progresses on Gedling Access Road

Neighbours in Mapperley have spoken out over the roadworks that 'have been driving them crazy' for more than a year.

It comes after a recent seven-night closure caused on Mapperley Plains between its junctions with Plains Road and Gedling Road, and Spring Lane, which finally completed on Tuesday (February 1).

This was linked to the major construction of the Gedling Accession Road, which affected the traffic in the area "for years" according to residents.

Helen Graper, a carer and illustrator in Linden Place, said: "I just do not understand the logic behind it because the roadworks have been horrendous for years now.

"I cannot wait to use it but it has been an absolute nightmare for residents on the backside."

The 48-year-old added: "It is bad at best - the roadworks have been driving me crazy."

Once finished it will provide a link between B684 Mapperley Plains, the A612 Trent Valley Road and Nottingham Road, as well as opening up land for new housing developments including the Chase Farm development headed by Keepmoat Homes.

A mum in Chartwell Grove, who wanted to remain anonymous, spoke of the disruption.

She said: "I moved here in 2020 so I do not know about the residents who have stayed here for longer than me - but for me it has been a nightmare for two years.

"Especially with the roadworks at night - they have been an absolute nuisance.

"Whenever the machine start on the worksite my dog starts barking - it is absolutely horrendous."

However, other residents in the area said the wait was "worth it" as the new road is due for completion in spring.

Doctor Naile Jadoon, of Chartwell Grove, 60, said: "We have to come to terms with it because it has to happen anyway.

"So rather than getting frustrated and get your body pressure high, it is better to just make peace with it."

Another resident in the area, who wished to remain anonymous, said she struggled to sleep at night and added: "The noise is a nightmare and so is the congestion.

"Also I am really sad that they had to cut the trees to build the road - a real shame."

Gary Wood, Head of Highways and Transport, said: “The works completed on Mapperley Plains during the seven-night closure are a key phase of the Gedling Access Road (GAR) construction.

“New surfacing has been put down to tie the new junction into the existing carriageway, and we would like to thank residents and motorists for their continued patience while our teams work towards the road’s completion.

“The night closure came to an end on 1 February and all lanes that were open to motorists before the closure are now reopened. Motorists are advised that the only remaining coned off areas are to keep the new GAR junction closed.

“There are no plans for further traffic management works on Mapperley Plains associated with the GAR in the immediate future and we would advise residents and motorists to sign up to the regular bulletin through our website for future updates: https://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/transport/roads/gedling-access-road/newsletter.”

Councillor Neil Clarke MBE, Chairman of the Transport & Environment Committee, added: “We have invested heavily in this major road development project and any short-term disruption has to be balanced against the long-term benefits this will bring to the whole area.”

Another lane closure on Mapperley Plains, which is linked to repairs to the frame and cover on the road, will commence on Wednesday (February 16) from 09.30 am until 3.30pm.
