Things have been slightly quiet on the Horizon front since the release of Lego Horizon Adventures back in late 2024. That's set to change relatively soon, as two massive spin-offs are in the works, and one of them is due to launch next year.
The world of Aloy and the mechanized dinosaurs will expand considerably with upcoming MMORRPG Horizon Steel Frontiers, and publisher NCSoft's latest financial report has given us a release window. According to the slides breaking down the company's upcoming slate, the game will come in the first half of 2027.
Nothing more specific is provided, but that's enough to get excited about, considering the dearth of releases from the franchise last year and this year. A free-to-play MMO, Steel Frontiers will take players to the Deadlands, where players will scope out fresh dinosaurs to take down and group up into factions for team-based combat.
It sounds somewhat similar to Monster Hunter, though with more PvP for the resources and prizes and resources available. It marks a bit of a seachange for the Horizon universe, as it's the first installment thus far not set for a PlayStation system.
It's due for PC and mobile devices at present, but I'm sure if it's popular we'll be able to play with a DualShock at some point. A co-op game, Horizon Hunters Gathering, is also on the way, coming from Guerrilla Games. That will come to PlayStation 5, and it's a more casual experience, pitting teams of up to three against various missions.
We still don't have word on the status of Horizon 3, the sequel to Forbidden West. Given the popularity of Aloy and the property generally, it seems a lock, but we haven't had any sort of reveal. Maybe at this year's Summer Game Fest? Watch this space.
