'Hopefully' - David Johnson on Brennan's Nottingham Forest contract stance ahead of promotion decider

Achieving promotion would mean “a completely different conversation” over Brennan Johnson’s Nottingham Forest future.

The 21-year-old’s dad, and former Reds ace, David says the youngster’s contract situation has been put to one side as the focus is on trying to reach the Premier League. But what happens in Sunday’s play-offs final against Huddersfield Town could have an impact on how any further talks go.

Johnson has enjoyed a brilliant breakthrough season in the Championship, bagging 19 goals so far, including one in each of his last three appearances. He will look to cap it by playing a key role at Wembley this weekend.

That form has seen him attract attention from elsewhere, however, with a number of top-flight clubs circling. Brentford did their best to try to prise him away in January, with Forest rejecting what would have been a club record fee in order to keep their star man.

Come the end of the campaign, the Wales international will have 12 months left to run on his current deal at the City Ground. Discussions have taken place over a new one, and David says they could be picked up again once the clash in the capital is over.

"It's one of those where we don't think about anything. He's under contract to the club, in fact the manager's contract is up at the same time,” he told NottinghamshireLive’s Garibaldi Red podcast.

"We just want to get Sunday out the way and hopefully the result is a great one and then we probably sit back down with the football club again. We don't worry about that. It's just that this is the last game.

“There's a big job to do. It's not just for my son, but if we get to the Premier League it's a completely different conversation with every player, not just Brennan."
