Police sent to mum's home hours before family tragedy

Police at the scene before the search for the baby boy was called off later on Wednesday. (HANDOUT/SOUTH AUSTRALIA POLICE)

The gruelling search for a missing baby has been abandoned, as police confirmed the child's mother visited police the day before her body was found alongside her toddler's in a suspected double murder-suicide.

The bodies of Helena Wright, 36, and her 23-month-old daughter were found in waters near Cape Northumberland on South Australia's southeast coast on Monday after police were alerted to an empty car with its engine left running.
