Hope for Arnold shop 'sitting there with its shutters down' to turn into new takeaway

Plans have been put forward to open a takeaway in a vacant shop that's 'sitting there' with its shutters down. An application has been submitted to open a new takeaway within the vacant premises, at 30 Eastham Road in Arnold.

The exact details of the type of takeaway, which would neighbour a hairdressing salon and convenient shop, remain unclear - and people in the town have been having their say on the prospect of a new eatery.

Poll: Who is your favourite Royal? Have your say here

Liz Pearson, who is 46 and lives in Arnold, said: “I think that if a new takeaway was to open, they’d have to be on Deliveroo and Just Eat, up here, you won’t get much people about unless they live here.”

The ful-time mum continued: “I’d definitely use it if it was a takeaway, no matter what it was. I use the little shop here all the time, they get a bit of trouble with the kids, there’s a sign at the door saying only two school children at a time.”

The now vacant shop is believed to previously have been a charity shop. The planning application suggests that a new takeaway would create jobs amongst the small row of shops.

Jed Clarke, 62 and from Arnold, said: “I’d like to see a chip shop open, that would be good.

“I would rather see the shop open than closed, of course; it’s just sitting there with its shutters down.”

He continued: ”It depends what it is, the last thing the owner would want is a takeaway that no one is going to.”

A part of the planning application states: "Hot food takeaways are not uncommon within small local shopping parades and it is not considered the proposed use would significantly impact on the character of the area."

Church caretaker David Johnson, 40,who lives near Eastham Road, said: “I’m not sure how well a takeaway would go down here, it seems a bit random but hopefully the owner tries and succeeds.

"I don’t use the shops around here because I work near the city centre and drive but I always see people walking up to the small supermarket here sometimes leaving with bags.”

The planning application for the new business has been submitted to Gedling Borough Council on behalf of Muharrem Karadaban.
