Hooters splits opinions as bar prepares to arrive in Liverpool

Opinions are split on the arrival of Hooters in Liverpool after the bar hosted a recruitment day before opening in the city.

The American chain, which serves beer and bar food and employs scantily-clad waitresses, is expected to open here this summer. It will be found in New Zealand House on Water Street - the site which used to be Newz Bar.

Hooters in Liverpool has split opinion since it was first mooted. Mayor Joanne Anderson is among those who are against its arrival, saying: "Hooters has an infamous sexually objectifying and misogynistic environment".

It will be the second branch of Hooters to open in England, following Nottingham. Around 200 jobs are available and no previous experience is required as staff will be trained "the Hooters Way".

After the ECHO reported that the chain had held a recruitment event in Liverpool city centre's Hilton hotel, readers had their say about Hooters coming to the city.

Writing on the ECHO's Facebook page, Christine Alexander asked: "Could we not have had something classier? A Hard Rock Cafe would have been ideal." David Jones added: "I’ve been to the restaurants in Miami, Florida and New York with my family, and always had a great experience, and the firecracker hot wings are to die for!"

On the ECHO website, Clive Etheridge added: "Their Chicken wings are to die for. Food is great. Nice cold beer. I went to the one In Cancun Mexico on my honeymoon to watch the Liverpool match with the wife, she loved it."

Scouse48 said: "I have lived in the US for 45 years and have been in many Hooters. Food is great, especially chicken wings. I think they are great places to go for a meal and a pint of cold beer. User Debr said: "I do think it objectifies the girls working there".

ECHO website commenter Penhar said: "Here we go - Back to the seventies!" On Facebook, Steven Shanley struck a similar tone, saying: "Don't think Emmeline Pankhurst would be impressed".

However, User MillsMollsMand said: "Personally it’s not for me, but if women/girls apply, want to do that kind of thing then let them crack on!"
