Hooded Edinburgh thief steals teacher's bike and laptop as he nips to the shop

An Edinburgh primary school teacher has shared their anger at having his bike and laptop snatched from outside a local store in broad daylight.

Max Wekk, who works as a teacher at Davidson’s Mains primary school was cycling home shortly after 3.00pm on Tuesday August 30. He stopped by the local Spar on Main Street and after noticing some friendly faces at the bus stop he left his bike perched outside the store.

But after only 90 seconds in the shop he found that his bike had been stolen by a conniving bike thief. As well as having his bike stolen, his laptop that was attached to the bicycle was also taken.

On the ordeal, he said: “I'm a school teacher at Davidson's Mains and was cycling home earlier than normal on Tuesday due to child care commitments. I left school just after my class and cycled to the local Spar on Main Street. Being well known in the area and seeing a few familiar faces at the nearby bus stop, I just propped my bike up outside the shop and popped in.

“I was in for 90 seconds at most - literally enough to buy something and come out. I hadn't even noticed the guy, though he spoke to one of the people at the bus stop briefly before getting on my bike and cycling off.

“I have been able to obtain some footage that shows the man in the photo to be the one that stole the bike. The photo is just a screen shot of CCTV.

“The thing that I am most annoyed about is the laptop which was relatively new and quite expensive. I'd been taking it to work as the laptops that the council provide us with are not fit for purpose and many people end up having to use their own.”

Police Scotland officers were able to recover the bike but a few items, including the laptop, bike lock and phone holder had been removed.

Max shared an image of the alleged culprit that shows a thin man dressed in black with his hood up.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers received a report of the theft of a bike and a laptop from outside a shop at around 3.45pm on Tuesday, 30 August, 2022. Enquiries are ongoing.”
