Homes plunged into darkness after 'explosion'

Dozens of homes have been plunged into darkness after people heard an “explosion” from an electrical substation.

Merseyside Fire And Rescue Service received a 999 call at 8.34pm on Monday, March 13 following reports of an incident on Church Road in Garston. Once fire crews arrived at the scene six minutes later they found an electrical substation was on fire.

Crews worked to put out the flames and put a cordon in place along a field off Church Road. Nobody is believed to have been injured during the fire.

Scottish Power and Merseyside Police are also at the scene as a number of homes were left without power following the incident.

There were a number of bricks on the floor outside the electrical substation, with people in the area reporting they heard a huge explosion.

One man living in the area said he heard the “big bang” before the power went off in his home.

He said: “There was a big bang and now it’s all black. I think the electric box has blew.

“It looks like there’s been an explosion as there are bricks everywhere.”

Another woman said: “I live a bit further away and my electricity went off. I didn’t hear a bang or anything but there’s loads of police and fire here now.”

The Scottish Power website says it hopes to have power restored by 10.30pm, and that the following post codes have been affected L19 2NL, L19 8AB, L19 8BQ, L19 8EE, L19 8EG, L19 8EQ, L19 8HG, L19 8HU, L19 8HX, L19 8JA, L19 8NS, L19 8NU.
