Homeowners near Dublin Airport's new runway facing summer of noise hell

Householders along Dublin Airport's new North runway are facing a summer of noise hell.

Transport Minister Eamon Ryan has admitted it will be months before preventative action can be taken to change the flight paths causing them noise disruption.

A review was ordered by the independent Aircraft Noise Regulator after they were inundated with complaints from residents when the new runway opened last August.

The Dublin Airport Authority (daa) which is responsible for the running of the airport was told to collate all the necessary data.

The Minister confirmed 18 new noise monitoring terminals - 16 fixed and two mobile - are being added to the existing noise monitoring system of 10 fixed and three mobile in place.

A further 12 fixed noise monitors are scheduled to be installed over the coming months.

A new departures flight plan was introduced on February 23 last which aligned more closely with those previously consulted on with the local residents as part of the original planning process.

Mr Ryan said as a result of this it is expected that a small number of dwellings, which were previously on the verge of eligibility for mitigation measures, may now become eligible.

He stated: " The Airport Noise Regulator has commenced a review of the impact of aircraft noise on the communities around Dublin Airport. The daa has been directed to provide operational data to the Aircraft Noise Competent Authority (ANCA) to inform the review.

"This data will be assessed on a phased basis over a number of months and the outcome of the review will be made public.

"Due to the technical nature and volume of the information from the DAA, data will be submitted and assessed on a phased basis over the coming months.

"Through the process the ANCA will determine if it is necessary to introduce additional noise control measures around Dublin Airport.

"This review will examine how the airport has operated since the new runway opened on 24 August , 2022, and consider how aircraft operation may affect the areas around the airport in the years ahead."

Fingal Labour TD Duncan Smith, who raised the issue with him in a written Dáil question, told how residents around the airport are really suffering and sick and tired of their lives being disrupted by the noise levels.

He said: "There has been great concern from many communities in North County Dublin since the opening of the North Runway as many flights are taking flight paths which bear little resemblance to the east west flight paths as set out in years of public consultations for noise insulation schemes.

"Many flights which are taking off to the west are immediately banking north and flying low and loud over communities which were never expected to be overflown.

"This is having a huge impact on the quality of life of many households and impacting on local schools too."
