A house where an entire family was brutally murdered more than 20 years ago is on the market. The three-bed semi-detached house in Clydach, Swansea Valley, has just come on to the market with an asking price of over £175,000.
The property at Number 9, Kelvin Road was home to 34-year-old Mandy Power, her 80-year-old mum Doris and her two young daughters Katie, 10 and Emily, eight. All four were killed in the house on June 27, 1999, and the property was then set on fire, Wales Online reports .
However, what was believed to be an attempt to destroy evidence was unsuccessful due to the rapid response of firefighters, who were able to extinguish the blaze. The horror crime sent shockwaves throughout the UK and prompted one of the biggest murder investigations by the Welsh police force .
Local man David Morris was later convicted on two occasions; firstly at Swansea Crown Court in 2002, a verdict which was overturned on appeal, and then again following a retrial at Newport Crown Court in 2006.
At the time of the murders, Morris claimed he had shared a sexual relationship with Ms Power and has continued to maintain his innocence over the last two decades. In 2018, a bid to take his case to the Court of Appeal was rejected by the Criminal Cases Review Commission.
But in 2021, South Wales Police announced an investigative assessment of fresh claims raised by Morris's lawyers. It followed the release of BBC documentary in October 2020, which identified two potential new witnesses to events on the night the family were murdered, and also raised questions over potential forensic evidence.
The documentary featured the alleged sightings of two men near the home on the night of the killings.
A spokesman for South Wales Police added: "In January, 2021, South Wales Police announced an investigative assessment of specific areas referred to by legal representatives of David Morris. This work has also included following up potential new witnesses identified in a BBC Wales Investigates programme on the case.
Mandy's family have always believed that the right man was convicted of the murders. Her ex-husband and father of their two children broke a 21-year silence ahead of the 2020 documentary to say Morris's trial verdict was 'the right one'.
However, Morris's family have dedicated their lives to a long-running campaign to clear his name, even following his death from natural causes in August 2021. The 59-year-old died in prison while serving a minimum of 32 years at HMP Long Lartin, Worcestershire.
According to government data, the house on Kevin Road was previously sold in 2003 for £48,000. Since then, the house has been refurbished and extended to create a larger than average semi detached house. It features three double-bedrooms, a family bathroom and cloakroom, and three spacious reception rooms.
The front garden is elevated and includes a sitting area on the front terrace. Inside the house, the hall flows into a spacious reception room with an ornate period fireplace and LED strip lighting hiding behind the picture rails.
The second reception room forms part of a broken-plan rear area and features a log burner next to a contemporary, glossy kitchen that looks out onto the garden. It also has an extra cosy lounge area.
To the rear is a bonus dining room within an extension that leads out into the garden via a bank of glass bi-fold doors onto a patio area. Then a set of steps lead to a level of grass before reaching a garden bar, complete with deck, seating area and fish pond outside.
Inside the bonus building is a bar with fridges, television and a place for visitors to sit and watch the drinks being poured, and a lounge area with table and built-in seating and LED lighting. The house also offers roof solar panels at the rear of the property.
The house is on the market for offers over £175,000 with estate agents Perfect Pads Sales and Lettings, who say they have extra material information in relation to the property to tell enquirers once they contact the office on 01792 845855.
