Home Office releases booklet telling asylum seekers rape is serious crime

  • The Home Office has published a new guidance document titled "Understanding behaviours and expectations in the UK" to inform asylum seekers about UK laws on gender equality, consent, and respect.
  • The guide explicitly warns that committing serious crimes such as rape, domestic abuse, or sex with a minor can result in imprisonment, loss of accommodation, and rejection of asylum claims.
  • School standards minister Georgia Gould urged the public not to make "full generalisations" about asylum seekers, defending the contributions and values of refugees coming to Britain.
  • A supplementary leaflet titled "Keeping Children Safe in the UK" warns that female genital mutilation and forced child marriage are serious criminal offences.
  • Opposition politicians, including shadow home secretary Chris Philp, criticised the booklet and argued that the government should focus on deporting illegal migrants instead.
