Home expert's cleaning hack makes dusty surfaces 'sparkling' for just £1.50

No matter how often you clean your house, dust can easily gather on surfaces making it look messy and uncared for.

This problem is especially bad in the winter, when you're less likely to open the windows throughout the day. This means that dust and other debris such as pet hair have less chance of escaping your home, and it'll gather on your tables, windowsills and other furniture.

But there are a couple of quick and cheap fixes to keep your home free from dust, as revealed by an expert from MyJobQuote - including a particularly useful tip for clean and shiny wooden tables.

Ryan McDonough, an interior design specialist, says that all you need for dust-free wooden surfaces is a splash of baby oil.

He understands that dust can be a real pain on these kinds of tables as it's more likely to show up and look dirty, but using a small amount of this oil will quickly change that.

Ryan said: "£1.50 baby oil could leave your wooden surfaces dust-free and sparkling. Simply apply a small amount of oil to a cleaning cloth and wipe the wooden surfaces in circular motions. Be sure not to try this on your wooden floors as this could cause them to be slippery."

A bottle of Johnson's baby oil will set you back £1.50 from Amazon, making it the perfect thrifty hack.

For elsewhere in the home, Ryan has shared some more tips for removing dust and keeping them looking fresh all winter long.

Tumble dryer sheets

These are particularly useful for cleaning your skirting boards, which can get really dusty over time.

Ryan explained: "If you're struggling to keep your skirting board dust free this hack could stop dust from sticking to them for months. All you need for this tip is tumble dryer sheets which you can buy for as little as £1.50.

"Wipe down all of the skirting boards in your home with tumble dryer sheets, we recommend using a new sheet per room, or if the room is larger you may need to use two. This will create static which should stop dust from sticking to them for weeks on end, repeat this every month to prevent the build-up of dust."

Socks

This may seem like an odd one, but using a clean sock is the ideal way for cleaning those hard-to-reach dusty surfaces.

Ryan explained: "Dust often gathers in places that can be difficult to fully clean such as the inside of lampshades. When this happens try swapping your cleaning cloth for a clean sock, place this over your hand and wipe down the nooks and crannies.

"There's no need to buy new socks to do this, if you use a clean pair this will work perfectly."

Fabric conditioner

It can be difficult to keep glass tables clean and prevent smears from making them look dirty, but apparently all you need is a small amount of fabric conditioner to do the trick.

Ryan said: "Dust can ruin the aesthetic of your shiny glass table but this truck using £1.15 fabric conditioner and water could prevent dust from gathering.

"In a spray bottle mix together two tablespoons of fabric conditioner and one cup of water before shaking the bottle. Spray the mixture onto a cleaning cloth to dampen it and wipe down the entire table, this should prevent dust from settling on the glass surface."
