Yes, Home Depot penny deals are absolutely real, but they aren't actual "sales" or promotions intended for customers. When an item at Home Depot goes on clearance and sits on the shelf long enough without selling, the system automatically drops the price to $0.01.
It's actually an alert for Home Depot employees. It flags the item so the staff knows to pull it off the sales floor, remove it from active inventory, and either throw it away, destroy it, or send it back to the manufacturer.
If an employee misses one of these items and leaves it on the shelf, a customer can pick it up. If you scan that item at the register, it will genuinely ring up for $0.01.
However, f you go to a cashier and the item pops up for a penny, store policy says that they're not allowed to sell it to you. They are supposed to explain that it's an error, confiscate the item, and throw it in the return bin. The reason you see so many people getting these deals online is because they take the items directly to self-checkout.
