Home Bargains staff mourn local celebrity cat Roy who was a store regular

Staff at Home Bargains in Tondu have offered their condolences after the passing of legendary 'Home Bargains cat' Roy. Roy was put to sleep in July after his health worsened.

An outpouring of sympathy followed on the official Roy Spotting Facebook page and in the WalesOnline Facebook comments as people shared their memories of Roy. One commenter said: "When I met him he was sitting on the donation food box at the exit, he was very friendly."

Another said: "Awh bless him, I will miss saying hello to the fella. He really was a pleasure to see. Rest in peace Roy." In Roy's final days, he was cared for by Janet Brady at Maesteg Animal Welfare Society, a volunteer-run rescue centre with a non-destruction policy which cares for lost, stray and abandoned cats and dogs.

Janet said: "Roy was a fantastic character, and I am very pleased that we could help to make him comfortable in his final weeks. He will always be missed in our community, but his legacy will live on." To thank MAWS for its support and to commemorate Roy, Home Bargains has donated £500 to the charity. Roy had been a local celebrity in the Tondu store since 2017.

Fleur, manager of Home Bargains in Tondu, said: "Roy was such a character — we all loved him, and we already miss him desperately. So many local people have donated to the charity which supported him, and we wanted to do our bit so that the shelter can support other animals in need.

"We have a donation box in store for people to add anything from toys to food, and this extra cash donation should help even more!"

Roy's owner Brian Aubrey added: "Jan did such a fantastic job looking after Roy in his final weeks; we are comforted to hear that the charity will benefit from this donation. We hope all those homeless Roys out there will benefit in his memory."

(BRIAN AUBREY)

Brian's grandson Dafydd Phillips set up the Roy Spotting page after Roy started to gain some local fans - and the page even helped people form new friendships. One Facebook commenter said: "Roy is a legend. We met him by chance and started a WhatsApp group called 'meow with us,' generally meowing and sharing cat related stuff. RIP Roy."
