Home Bargains are selling home DNA tests for £4.99 but there's a catch

Shoppers have been reacting after spotting a 'home DNA test' for sale on the shelves of Home Bargains for £4.99. The DIY kit boasts about being able to establish both the paternity and maternity of a child as well as offering "next-day results."

But upon closer inspection of the package it becomes apparent that, once used the item – which also claims to determine other biological issues regarding siblings, twins, and grandparents – actually needs to be sent off to a laboratory to be processed. And to get those sample results back will cost the purchaser an additional £99.

"LOL – you pay for the kit and take the sample but then send it off to a private lab," tweeted one shopper. "It costs an extortionate amount on top of the actual kit price."

"Oh s*** – didn't expect that," replied another. "You learn something new every day."

"So it's £5 to buy but £100 to get the results?" asked someone else on Facebook. "I never noticed you had to sent them off when I picked up the box – I was too shocked that they were even selling them."

And others were also less than impressed with product, calling the kits "leftovers from Jeremy Kyle." "Stay classy," posted one person, while another added: "There's going to be scenes in town tonight."

The packaging is quick to point out that the kit isn't suitable in the case of child maintenance disputes (UCG)

Described on the Home Bargains website as "the fastest, most accurate home DNA paternity test in the UK" the product claims to give "the most accurate result possible". The blurb added: "The DNA home paternity testing kit includes cheek swabs and consent forms, which must be signed and posted back to the laboratory.

"Confidential, fast and accurate, simply take the test, fill out the forms and send off the samples. Results are usually emailed the next working day from the samples being received at the laboratory and are password-protected for additional security."

However as a disclaimer on the packaging points out, "This kit is not suitable for any legal purpose such as changing a birth certificate or in connection with child maintenance disputes. You will need a legal test for that."
