Hollywood star surprises film festival audience at special screening

TONI Collette surprised a sold-out Glasgow Film Festival audience at a special screening of her breakout film Muriel's Wedding.

The Hollywood star – whose presence at the screening was kept tightly under wraps –joined festival staff on stage for a Dancing Queen lip-synch to the amazement of the crowd on Friday evening ahead of the film.

The award-winning actress then shared her memories of making the 1994 film when she was just 21 years old and chatted with GFF director Allison Gardner, who is celebrating her final year at the festival.

Collette, who starred as Muriel, revealed she was initially invited to make a video to introduce the film but was filming in London so decided to come in person.

She said: "Any excuse to come to Scotland and any excuse to celebrate film.

"I really did not know what to expect [...] but it's 30 years.

"I turned 21 when I was making this film and I'm now 52 and it really amazes me an experience that changed by life profoundly still resonates with people and this character means so much to people and continues to inspire people so thank you for having me here tonight.

"I'm quite moved."

The event was part of GFF's popular special event screenings which have previously seen The Thing screened on a real snow slope and Die Hard in an office block.

This year's film festival has also welcomed the likes of James McAvoy, Jessica Lange, Tim Roth and Ed Harris to the city.
