Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were 'misrepresented' during the recent queue-jumping row.
The This Morning presenters were under fire after attending the Queen's lying in state at Westminster Hall earlier this month.
Fans falsely accused the duo of skipping the queue, a claim which ITV has since denied and Holly and Phil have clarified.
ITV's Chief Executive Dame Carolyn McCall jumped to their defence and said the two did 'nothing' wrong.
"They did have accreditation. Lots of people saying they didn’t. They were sent by This Morning to do a piece for September 20, which ran," she explained at the RTS London Convention.
“They were to interview people inside and outside. They didn’t displace anyone in the queue. And they’ve been very misrepresented, actually.
"And that’s why we made a statement. Unusually, we made a statement to say all of those things. But it does show you how things spread and how misinformation just spreads. And it is really horrible for them."
Dame Carolyn went on to confirm the presenting duo are secure in their jobs at This Morning - despite a petition being made to remove them.
She said she had texted both and that they were not "feeling great."
"It’s hard. You imagine yourself in the eye of the storm like this, where you’re trying to say you’ve done nothing wrong and all the noise around you is saying that you have," Dame Carolyn added.
"It’s difficult to handle."
Earlier this month, programme bosses stressed the hosting duo attended as members of the media to film a segment for Tuesday’s show.
When This Morning returned on the Tuesday following the Queen’s funeral, Holly addressed the criticism made on social media.

Speaking on their daytime show last Tuesday, Holly issued a lengthy statement about the pictures of them at Westminster Hall.
She insisted they were given 'official permission' and said they were there 'strictly for reporting'.
Holly admitted they understood the backlash surrounding them being at the lying in state.
"We, of course, respected those rules. However, we realised it may have looked like something else and therefore totally understand the reaction.
"Please know we would never jump the queue," she concluded.
