Holiday Travel Surge: Airports Filled as Flights Exceed Pre-Pandemic Levels

Holiday travel rush surpassing pre-pandemic levels with 7.5 million people flying.

The holiday travel rush is in full swing, with AAA projecting that over 7.5 million people will fly for the holidays this year, surpassing even pre-pandemic levels. One of the nation's busiest airports, New York LaGuardia, is experiencing a significant influx of travelers. While security wait times at LaGuardia have not exceeded 15 minutes, some congestion has been reported at JFK, where one terminal has a wait time of close to an hour.

According to AAA, a total of 15 million people are expected to travel 50 miles or more away from home between now and January 1st. Of that number, around 7.5 million will opt for air travel, approximately 104 million will hit the roads, and 4 million will choose buses, trains, or cruise ships. Despite the popularity of air travel, a majority of people still prefer to get behind the wheel.

Interestingly, travel experts have highlighted the affordability of airfare this year, making it a more attractive option for many. However, for some travelers, convenience takes precedence over cost. Many find flying to be a faster and more convenient mode of transportation, even if driving may be more economical. As one traveler mentioned, 'Driving is like 13 hours compared to two hours, so I'd rather fly any time.'

To ensure seamless travel experiences, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) advises passengers to pack smart and pack right. If an item can spill, spray, spread, pump, or pour, it should be placed in a checked bag or limited to 3.4 ounces or less in a carry-on. By adhering to these guidelines, travelers can avoid unnecessary delays and expedite their passage through security checkpoints.

At LaGuardia Airport, there has been a fluctuation in passenger flow throughout the day. Mornings tend to be busier, with lines stretching for extended periods. However, as the day progresses, the airport experiences brief lulls. Airport staff anticipates another rush in the late afternoon, around 4 pm. To navigate through these varying traffic patterns, passengers are advised to check with their airlines and arrive at the airport well in advance.

Overall, the holiday travel season is well underway, with airlines witnessing a surge in passenger numbers. Travelers are encouraged to plan accordingly, keeping in mind travel times, security regulations, and potential disruptions. With the right preparation, everyone can enjoy a smooth and enjoyable journey to their holiday destinations.
