The cast of Holby City had "absolutely no idea" that the show was going to be axed after two decades.
David Ames, who stars on the BBC medical drama, is devastated that the show is ending tonight after 23 years on screens, and whilst he has promised a spectacular final episode, he admits none of the show's cast knew the show was ending.
Appearing on ITV's Lorraine today, he was quizzed on whether he - or any of his fellow castmates - had an idea the show could come to an end but he insists none of them had any idea it was being axed.
Lorraine asked if any of the cast had a feeling the axing was going to happen, David - who played Dominic Copeland - admitted: "We had absolutely no idea. Absolutely no idea. I remember I had a brief text chat with Russell T Davies about this.
"He said, normally you hear a bit of rumbling - someone will know something - but no not a thing."
However, David did promise the finale tonight would be very special for the audiences, as much-loved character Jac Naylor's life hangs in the balance as she's suffering from a brain tumour.
The BBC shocked fans when it announced Holby City would be ending.
"We’re very sorry to bring you the sad news that Holby City will come to an end in March next year, after 23 amazing years. We are so very grateful to all of Holby’s wonderful cast, crew, writers, producers - and to our millions of loyal viewers and fans for being part of our show," a post on the show's Twitter read at the time.
"This tough decision reflects the BBC’s commitment to make more programmes across the UK and to better reflect, represent and serve all parts of the country. Holby will remain on air on Tuesdays until next March, and we will continue to bring you a regular dose of all things Holby right here until then. We promise that Holby will get the send-off it deserves."
Fans have since launched a petition to beg the show to be reinstated but bosses have stuck with their decision to axe it.
