A prisoner who was serving a sentence at a high security County Durham jail "maliciously wounded" a prison officer.
Christopher Phillips carried out the offence against the male guard while serving a sentence at HMP Frankland. The 40-year-old committed the serious offence at the category A men's prison in Brasside on March 17, last year.
Phillips appeared at Durham Crown Court on Tuesday facing one charge of unlawful wounding. The charge states: "On 17th March 2021 at HMP Frankland, Brasside in the County of Durham, unlawfully and maliciously wounded a person, namely a prison officer."

Phillips pleaded guilty to the charge at the morning hearing, but will be sentenced at a later date so that a psychiatric report can be put together. Full details of the offence will be given at the sentencing hearing.
Addressing the defendant, Judge Robert Spragg, said: "You have sensibly pleaded guilty to this charge and you will rightly get credit for that. I am adjourning the sentencing hearing in order for a psychiatric report to be made."
Phillips, whose address is listed as HMP Birmingham, was remanded in custody until Wednesday, April 27, when he will be sentenced.
