Hit Scottish musical to return to the stage this year

A HIT musical that first took to the stage in 2007 is due to make a comeback this Christmastime.

The five-week run of Sunshine on Leith at Pitlochry Festival Theatre (PFT) will begin on November 17 and run till December 23.

Its return comes after the last set of shows were brought to a halt in the King's Theatre in Edinburgh after a number of Covid cases hit the cast.

The jukebox musical includes hits from The Proclaimers such as I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles), Letter from America, Over and Done With, Let’s Get Married with many more and of course its namesake Sunshine on Leith.

Jane Horrocks and Peter Mullan transformed the hit stage production into a 2013 feature film, which follows the plot of Davy and Ally returning from war overseas as they are confronted with civic life, blind dates, and new responsibilities.

As the pair begin to question what home really means to them as they rediscover their sense of identity.

The director of the upcoming run and PFT's artistic director Elizabeth Newman said: “After the hugely successful sold-out production that we made with Capital Theatres last summer we couldn’t resist the chance to make a new production for audiences this Festive Season to celebrate the greatest and most loved Scottish musical by Stephen Greenhorn.”

The original playwright, Stephen Greenhorn added: "I'm thrilled that Sunshine in Leith will be returning to Pitlochry Festival Theatre later this year. Their production was simply joyous, and I can't wait to see it again."

Originally conceived last year in partnership with Capital Theatres, Sunshine on Leith will run at Pitlochry Festival Theatre from 17 November to 23 December.

Further information about casting will be announced in the coming months.

Tickets go on sale on 17 May, which range from £16-£42 and can be bought on their website HERE.
