History shows why Man City can bounce back from rare Etihad setback

Manchester City fans were understandably unhappy at seeing their side lose further ground on leaders Arsenal on the final Premier League weekend before the World Cup break.

The gut-wrenching defeat to Brentford early on Saturday was only compounded by the Gunners' routine win at Wolves later that night.

The gap between the two sides is now five points and Pep Guardiola's side have six weeks to stew over it due to events in Qatar now taking centre stage. But City fans should not be too concerned, despite seeing their side beaten on home soil by a side without an away win in six months.

Since his arrival at the club in 2016, Pep Guardiola has an envious home record in the Premier League. Saturday's defeat was only his 12th loss in 122 top-flight matches in M11.

And if recent history is anything to go by, then lessons will clearly have been learned following the shock setback on home soil.

Last season Guardiola's men lost just twice at the Etihad. The first home defeat was to Crystal Palace in October. They followed it up by streaking together a 15-match unbeaten run in the league. The next, and only, time they ended up on the losing side at home was against Tottenham in February. But they recovered to go unbeaten in their final 12 league games and pip Liverpool to a fourth crown in five seasons.

Despite the disappointment of the sucker punch to Thomas Frank's side, do not be surprised if City go on a long unbeaten domestic run once the top flight resumes next month.
