Historic pub could be converted into flats in Birkenhead

An historic pub in Birkenhead could be converted into nine apartments if plans are approved by Wirral Council.

The Bidston, which sits on the corner of Challis Street and Hoylake Road, dates back to the 19th century and was previously known as the Telegraph Inn and Hotel.

The proposed new apartments would be spread over three floors with existing windows replaced with double glazing. As only nine apartments would be created, it falls below the threshold of having to provide affordable housing.

Applicant Trinick Property claimed the plans would improve the building with bins, new cycle storage, and a communal garden around the back.

The proposals would provide one and two bedroom apartments creating “residential accommodation to the lower end of the market which will also help with the council's housing shortage.”

As part of the development, insulation would be put in on the external walls as well as the roof with new doors and more energy efficient heating systems.

A planning application has also been submitted to redevelop a medical office building off Cleveland Street in central Birkenhead.

The existing Maple House building could be knocked down and replaced with a four floor building containing 20 apartments. Two of these would be affordable, according to plans submitted by Don Holmes.

The property would face demolition because the current building is “deteriorating rapidly and attempts to repair major elements of the envelope have failed," the application said.

Developers have pointed to the proposal’s location at the heart of several Birkenhead regeneration projects to support the scheme.

A car park would be put in around the back to “promote an active and attractive façade” as well as new trees and grass planted.

This week, Wirral Council also approved an application to allow the Port Sunlight Tennis Club to replace its clubhouse and new fenced tennis courts.
