Historic peace deal signed with separatists in Senegal's Casamance region

EYE ON AFRICA © FRANCE 24

After three years of talks, a peace deal has been signed between separatists and the central government in Senegal's southern Casamance region. It's hoped the agreement could bring an end to one of the longest-running conflicts on the continent, in which thousands of people have been killed and displaced since 1982.

Elsewhere, the Rwandan government says it has not supported the revived M23 rebel movement in eastern DR Congo, this despite UN experts asserting that Kigali provided weapons and uniforms to the group.

The Congolese government says it would like the MONUSCO peacekeeping mission to leave the country before the end of 2024. It says the peacekeepers' efforts to quell conflicts with the M23 and other armed groups in eastern DR Congo have failed.

On Friday, more than 5,000 people attended a mass burial in the eastern Congolese city of Goma for 10 protesters killed during recent anti-UN demonstrations.
