Historic Oscars Nominations: Records Set, Diversity Celebrated, Legends Honored

96th Oscars Nominations in Beverly Hills

Every year, the Oscars make history with groundbreaking wins and record-breaking achievements. In recent years, the Academy Awards have seen significant milestones in diversity and representation.

Last year, Michelle Yeoh made history as the first Southeast Asian woman to win Best Actress, while Ke Huy Quan became the first Vietnamese Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actor. In 2020, the Korean film Parasite became the first non-English language film to win Best Picture, and Moonlight in 2017 was the first Best Picture winner with an all-Black cast.

At the 96th Academy Awards, several potential records are on the line. Lily Gladstone, known for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon, could become the first Native American actress to win Best Actress. Actor Domingo, nominated for his portrayal of activist Bayard Rustin, could be the first Afro-Latino man to win Best Actor.

Legendary composer John Williams, at 92, could become the oldest Oscar winner ever if he wins Best Original Score. Director Martin Scorsese, with his 10th nomination for Killers of the Flower Moon, might become the oldest Best Director winner in Oscars history.

Christopher Nolan's film Oppenheimer, with 11 nominations, has the potential to tie the record for most Oscars won by a film. Thelma Schoonmaker, Scorsese's longtime editor, could break the record for the most decorated film editor in Academy Awards history if she wins for Killers of the Flower Moon.

These achievements and milestones at the Oscars showcase the evolving landscape of the film industry, highlighting diversity, representation, and the enduring talent of artists across various categories.
