Historic Edinburgh New Town building may get roof terrace with jaw-dropping views

Edinburgh could have a new roof terrace in the heart of the city centre - if plans are given the green light.

The City of Edinburgh Council are currently considering an application to convert the roof space at the A-listed Edwardian 71 George Street, which sits on the junction with Frederick Street in a prime spot in the capital's New Town.

The proposals form part of the move to transform the historic property into 29 luxury serviced apartments, which has already been given approval.

The building used to house the Nationwide Building Society and was recently marketed as a development opportunity to be turned into new accommodation.

The plan is for the rooftop terrace to be used by those renting out the 'most premium units' on the fifth floor. The application, submitted on behalf of RRH Investments Ltd, states: "a small rooftop terrace is now proposed, to be accessed by guests staying in the most premium units on 5FL.

"There are strong precedents for rooftop terraces on George Street and it’s locale. This needs to be balanced with the historic significance of this A listed property and therefore this intervention is to be kept as quiet as possible."

Artist impressions of the planned roof terrace have also been included as part of the proposal, which you can view in full on the council website here.
