A 67-year-old man in Japan became convinced that he, the people around him, and everyday objects were growing taller and bulkier. His wife, he told doctors, "seems to be rapidly decreasing in size." At the same time, he was seeing countless tiny bugs crawling over his entire body.
Psychiatrists and a radiologist at Tohoku Medical and Pharmaceutical University in Sendai describe the case in a Case Reports in Psychiatry case report published April 7. They diagnosed Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS), a perceptual distortion disorder named after Lewis Carroll's novel, along with Ekbom syndrome, during the man's first manic episode of bipolar I disorder.
