Palmeiras talent and Arsenal transfer target Danilo picked up his second red card of the season on Sunday during what was described as 'another average performance' by viewers of the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A.
The 21-year-old received a straight red after catching the back of Yeferson Soteldo's ankle with his studs up. It comes one month after his previous dismissal, which was also due to a dangerous challenge that saw his studs make contact with Matias Zaracho's calf in the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals.
Brazilian football fans have since taken to social media to voice their opinions on Danilo's recent displays, suggesting that he could be distracted by transfer interest from Arsenal. "Danilo has been below par for a few months now. Another red card for him tonight against Santos combined with an average performance. Looks like his head is elsewhere," one Twitter user said.

Meanwhile, a Palmeiras supporter claimed that the midfielder looked like someone who no longer wants to be at the club. "Danilo plays a lot, but he no longer has his mind on Palmeiras. We don't need players who don't want to be at the club!". Another fan said: "Once again Danilo let Palmeiras down. Wrong all over again, he doesn't hit another pass, worse on the field and ended the Palmeiras game."
Arsenal explored a deal for Danilo this summer, however, it was anticipated that negotiations would be tough to negotiate due to the Brazilian side's reluctance to sell. Despite this, interest could be reignited in January, football.london understands. It's believed Palmeiras did not want to lose Danilo at the time due to their involvement in the Copa Libertadores semi-finals, while the early closure of the Brazilian transfer window meant it was not possible for them to bring in a replacement.
Technical director Edu is a long-term admirer of Danilo having first shown an interest in the midfielder earlier this year. His ability to operate as a progressive No.6 matches the profile of player the club is looking for, with the recent injuries to Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny highlighting the shortage of defensive-minded options available to Mikel Arteta.
Although his recent performances may tell a different story, Danilo remains one of the most talented young midfielders in Brazil and a key player for his side. It's unlikely that he will come cheap, but Palmeiras could reluctantly grant Danilo's wish if he wishes to move on in the coming months. It's been a long wait, but it looks like Arsenal could finally be in with a chance of securing one of their long-term targets should they wish to continue the pursuit this winter.
