Hip-hop turns 53 this week, marking more than half a century since a party in a Bronx apartment building helped ignite a cultural movement that would eventually transform music, fashion, language, dance, and Hollywood.
The anniversary traces back to Aug. 11, 1973, when Cindy Campbell organized a "Back to School Jam" at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, with her brother, Clive Campbell, better known as DJ Kool Herc, behind the turntables.
