The lie inside the arrow
Progress is a direction. That's the whole claim. History moves forward, civilisations improve, suffering decreases, and the arc bends, you know the rest. It's a story so embedded in modern life that questioning it feels like pessimism, or worse, ingratitude. But the story has a structural problem: it requires you to ignore most of what actually happens to human beings over time.
