Hillwalker rushed to hospital by helicopter after suffering 'serious injuries' on Scots mountain

A hillwalker was rushed to hospital by helicopter on Saturday after falling on Ben Cruachan and suffering "serious injuries".

Rescue workers had to be flown out to the casualty and then winched down to them before they could help in the difficult terrain in Argyll and Bute.

The team were then able to transfer the hillwalker safely to HM Coastguard who took the casualty to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow.

Oban Mountain Rescue Team have released a safety warning to the public about difficult weather conditions in the hills despite the spring months.

A spokesperson said: "Team called out today to a report of a hillwalker who had fallen on Ben Cruachan sustaining serious injuries.

"Team members, including a team doctor were winched down to the casualty by HM Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 199, and assisted the winchman to treat and package the casualty. The casualty was then winched back onboard Rescue 199 and transferred to hospital in Glasgow. We wish the casualty a speedy recovery.

"Clocks Spring forward tonight but Winter icy snow still covers many ridge and summit paths in the highlands. If you are heading to the hills this week make sure you are still well equipped and prepared for winter mountain travel and the cold weather."

“The Police Scotland and Oban mountain rescue teams attended and located the man who was subsequently airlifted to hospital by the coastguard.”

HM Coastguard added: "HM Coastguard’s helicopter from Prestwick was sent to assist. It was following reports of a man who had fallen – he was winched by our helicopter who took him to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital."
