Hillsborough County's state of local emergency over dengue fever is set to expire Oct. 15 unless County Administrator Bonnie Wise signs another extension. That would be the third renewal since the county declared the emergency Sept. 24. The county's latest extension order says crews are increasing air and ground treatments because surveillance in many neighborhoods still shows dengue virus activity in mosquitoes.
The decision comes as the outbreak keeps growing. Florida's latest weekly surveillance report, covering cases through Oct. 3, counts 296 locally acquired cases statewide this year, 259 of them in Hillsborough. The county has spent $4.1 million on mosquito control, FOX 13 reported from a county commission meeting.
