Punters got more than they bargained for at the Carrigallen Mart weekly heifer sale when a hen party off for a night on the town decided to pop their head in for what has been called a “bit of craic”.
The hilarious display occurred on Saturday when the group of hens headed along to the well known Leitrim mart. All in all about 10 women ended up at the mart, decked out in full hen attire, not the usual mart wear of wellies.
The unannounced visit was reportedly all in good fun, with the women staying on for a while and enjoying themselves at the mart before continuing on to the next part of the crawl.
One mart goer managed to catch the group on video, sharing the footage to Twitter, alongside the caption: "Carrigallen Mart invaded by a flock of Hens last night" and a hen emoji, bride emoji, ring emoji and a cow emoji.
Speaking to the Farmers Journal, auctioneer Micheál O'Reilly explained how he was looking around the crowds of people that Saturday for bids when he met the group of hens, adding that he believes the party may have even had a positive impact on the trade.
"I was in the process of looking around to see the person in the box who was selling the cattle and was unexpectedly greeted by a bunch of ladies," he told the publication.
"I didn't quite catch on at first who the girls were, but it was actually a neighbour. It was different and definitely a bit of craic. I kept on taking bids and seen that the hen party might have had a slight help on the trade.
He added: “You'd see a lot of different things come through the mart doors, but you wouldn't expect a hen party."
