Highland cow repeatedly tears lights off pub's Christmas tree

A Highland cow repeatedly tore fairy lights off a pub's Christmas tree over the festive period. The free-roaming beast had punters in stitches on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, after yanking plugged in lights out of an outdoor tree and getting them tangled in its horns.

It had done the same thing about a week before Christmas at Keel Row pub, Fionnphort, Isle of Mull, Inner Hebrides. The cow, nicknamed Blondie Junior, meandered towards the beach after spoiling the Christmas décor on December 24.

Islanders are used to Highland cows barging into their gardens and nobody attempted to retrieve the lights. The pub was bought by the community earlier this year.

Simon Wood, 55, said: "There's a few of them who wander around, they belong to a farmer and they're allowed free reign. They wander wherever they want to.

"They go into people's gardens, they tend to knock their way in. The cow came on three occasions.

"It first came down about a week before Christmas Eve. On Christmas Eve at about 4pm the bar staff saw it going past with the lights in its horns.

"It was heading towards the beach. We couldn't repair it so we didn't have any lights in the tree.

"It made a lot of people laugh, they all went tearing out the pub to try to retrieve it. You wouldn't want to try an get lights off a Highland cow's horns.

"It tickled a lot of people's funny bones. It happened again on Boxing Day.

"I found it caught in the act, with the lights in its horns again. It just broke them.

"The lights cost about £50 and were plug in, we might move the tree next year. Nobody got annoyed, the cows do all sorts of nonsense."
