High winds cause fatalities and damage and knock out power across the Commonwealth

Winds roared across Kentucky Friday, causing deaths and thousands of power outages across the commonwealth. That included more than 200,000 customers served by Kentucky Utilities-L-G and E. Daniel Lowery is the spokesman for the utility. He said the event ranks in the top ten of outages seen by KU and L-G and E. Lowery said the wind gusts of 70 to 80 miles per hour arrived later in the day Friday.

“Our system is designed to withstand extreme conditions. But, unfortunately, those trees aren’t,” said Lowery.

Statewide the website Poweroutage.us reported well over half a million outages last night.

Lowery said crews were coming in from other states to help with power restoration. He anticipates it could be Monday before electricity is back up for almost all customers.

The Fayette County coroner reported a storm-related death. 41-year-old Erica Nichole Yeary was killed when a tree fell on the vehicle she was operating early Friday evening. That brings the total of storm-related deaths in Kentucky up to three.
