High Street car park partially closed as six-month improvement work begins

Major work is set to begin on a popular car park that serves Thornbury High Street. The six-month improvement programme starts on Monday, November 14 and will see Rock Street car park partially close, operating at half capacity.

Rock Street car park on Bath Road currently has 347 bays with just 20 disabled parking spaces. The work will aim to increase the size of the bays and provide more disabled parking and family spaces.

South Gloucestershire Council said: "We are starting work on a six-month improvement programme in Rock Street car park on November 14. During this time, the car park will be operating at half capacity.

"The new design of the car park has been shaped by feedback from users and residents about the size of the spaces, availability of parent and child spaces and the disabled parking bays."

It is expected to close completely for two weeks in May 2023 at the end of the works for resurfacing. The work on the car park is part of South Gloucestershire Council's new vision for the high street to help the area recover after the pandemic, to boost the economy and "make the high street a central, attractive, accessible place for the whole community".

A total of £4.577 million of funding was secured from the Economic Development Fund to progress the vision for the future of the high street at the start of the year. After St Mary Street car park was resurfaced during the summer, Rock Street marks the next phase in the progress.

Work will begin on the high street itself in early 2023 to impose a permanent traffic regulation order along that stretch of the road which will see no motor vehicles, except for access, between Castle Court and The Close. It will also see a restricted parking zone and a 20mph speed limit from January 15, 2023.

Where can I park in Thornbury during the works?

For a period of two weeks, at the end of the works, in May 2023, the car park will be completely closed for resurfacing before it fully re-opens.

  • Rock Street car park will remain open with a reduced capacity
  • St Mary’s Street car park
  • Castle Court car park
  • Thornbury leisure centre – temporary park and stride facility
