High school sports star, 18, dies days before graduation after collapsing at practice

Tributes have poured in for a high school sports star who died just days before his graduation after collapsing during training.

Hunter Palmer, 18, was a standout American football player at Wisner-Pilger High School in Nebraska, earning all-district honours as a running back and committing to Midland University before collapsing during track practice on Friday.

He was taken to a hospital in West Point where he died. He is survived by his parents, his brother and his sister.

The talented teenager also competed in basketball, baseball, wrestling, golf and athletics, winning in the high jump at a track and field competition on Thursday – hours before his death – in which he also took part 4x400 relay, with his team finishing second.

"It is with a very heavy heart that we can confirm that Hunter Palmer, senior at Wisner-Pilger Schools, has died," a school spokesman said.

"Additional information regarding funeral arrangements will be shared once they are known. It is important for parents to check in on their children during this difficult time. Grief is very complicated and can affect each child differently. If your child needs any assistance, contact Wisner-Pilger Public Schools at 402-529-3249."

Midland head coach Jeff Jamrog, who helped recruit Palmer to commit to the university for the years ahead, led the tributes.

"Heaven gained a great young man," he said. "Our hearts are heavy and we are all suffering with the pain of the loss of Hunter Palmer. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Palmer family, friends and the Wisner-Pilger community.

"Our staff really enjoyed recruiting Hunter. He was a dynamic young man who was an absolute pleasure to be around. Hunter was someone so special and will never be forgotten.

"Hunter is gone way too soon. May you rest in eternal peace, Hunter. We miss you already."

Palmer signed his letter of intent to play for Midland in February and he was due to graduate from high school on Saturday.

Midland's defensive coordinator Denny Honnold added: "What a great pleasure it was getting to know this young man over the past year. Prayers for his family and friends. Heaven is gaining a young warrior who will be sorely missed."

An obituary from his loved ones said Palmer "loved hanging out with friends, driving around, watching Netflix, lifting weights, singing, and drinking Dr Pepper. His favourite teams were the Green Bay Packers and Clemson Tigers."

A friend on social media added: "Thank you for shining such a bright and beautiful light on this world, even if it was for such a short time."
