Hideki Matusyama is a very good golfer. He won The Masters in 2021, has eight wins on the PGA Tour total and reached as high as No. 2 in the Official World Golf Rankings back in 2017.
So it makes sense he entered a rather weak field at the 3M Open as one of the favorites (+1500 outright at Tipico) as the tour made its annual stop in Blaine, Minnesota.
It makes less sense that he picked up a quadruple bogey on the par-five 18th hole. But, wow, was it relatable. Hideki splashed three consecutive shots into the water and just looked absolutely over it as he made the turn.

Look, we’ve all been there. You hit one into the water and convince yourself, ‘Oh, I got this shot figured out now,’ only to put another in the drink. Then your ego takes over. You need to prove to everyone you have the tools to hit that shot—even at an incredibly difficult downhill slope—and it just continues to go worse and worse.

Plenty of weekend hacks would just pick up and move onto the next hole. Poor Hideki had to finish it out. His odds dropped to +12400 once he was finally able to move on.
This may have taken him out of play early this weekend, but at least he endeared himself to every wannabe pro out there.
It’s another reminder that golf is hard and cruel. Even for the best players.
